Until recently, even the most ambitious estimates from automakers and tech companies have slated fully autonomous vehicles for release to the general public in about five years. Leave it to Tesla Motors’ Elon Musk to flout convention and cut that estimate by more than half.

In a recent interview with Fortune Magazine, the billionaire entrepreneur asserted that he expects Tesla’s vehicles to have fully autonomous driving capabilities within two years. “I think we have all the pieces, and it’s just about refining those pieces, putting them in place, and making sure they work across a huge number of environments – and then we’re done.”
